Retirees may soon be able to get their eye surgery online without a referral
Posted January 11, 2019 07:23:25Many people still struggle with the fact that they cannot afford the pricey and time-consuming procedures needed to get them the medical treatment they need.
But a new technology is giving people a way to get that treatment without having to wait years in the future.
In a recent episode of “Good Morning America,” Dr. Mary Jane Seltzer, director of the Center for Health, Wellness, and Wellness Education at the Johns Hopkins University, shared with GMA how the Starch Solution can help ease some of those hurdles.
In her latest article, Seltzler says, “The Starch solution has been shown to reduce the need for expensive and time consuming procedures like cataract surgery.”
What is Starch?
The Starchy Solution is a patented compound that can be extracted from the starch in foodstuffs, such as bread and cereals.
The powder is mixed with water and added to a solution that has been prepared at a laboratory.
The solution is then heated to dissolve the starch and remove the excess water.
Seltzer explains, “Once the starch has been dissolved, the water and the starch can be heated to create a gel that forms a gel-like coating around the eye and in the cornea.”
This coating helps to prevent damage to the retina, which is the part of the eye that receives light from the sun.
It also helps to block the damage that occurs during laser eye surgery, where a laser beam is directed into the eye to destroy the retina.
“The Starchs solution also prevents damage to other parts of the retina,” says Seltzers.
“You can have a really clear vision and your eyes will be bright.”
The Stanchasee Solution is not as effective as a laser eye exam, but it is still a good option for people who are not looking to have a procedure, she adds.
Selsitzer says she and her colleagues at the Center are working on another technology that could potentially make the Stanchases solution even more effective.
She says the technology is called a “microfluidic platform” and it uses a technology called polymerase chain reaction to synthesize the Starchy solution from the flour in foods and then “digests” the solution in a laboratory for testing.
Sells StarchSolutionStarch Solution is currently in development at the National Institutes of Health.
Seltzes research is focused on the development of a new, cheaper and safer eye solution for people with chronic corneal problems.
Sellers research was funded by the National Eye Institute.
